In the footsteps of the Mayans, Aztecs and Zapotecs

In January 2025, I was on an absolutely fascinating Mexico tour, including comprehensive history and cultural attractions starting in Mexico City and ending up in Uxmal. Nearby to Mexico City, I initially visited the large Pyramids of the Sun and Moon at Teotihuacan, built long before Europeans reached North America. It was a great experience.

The tour attractions included among other things the UNESCO World Heritage site of Oaxaca, a Spanish colonial town, and nearby the archaeological site of Monte Albán. The ancient Zapotec metropolis of Monte Albán was founded in the sixth century BCE.

Visiting Oaxaca and Monte Albán, which has been inhabited for thousands of years by indigenous Zapotec and Mixtec peoples, was an amazing experience. Oaxaca is a city of colorful buildings, scenic rooftop restaurants and bars, stunning street art and historic Spanish colonial churches. I was fascinated of the many street art murals with vibrant colours in Jalatlaco, located northeast of the center.

On our way to San Cristóbal we saw many fabulois pyramids. San Cristóbal is the oldest Spanish settlement in the Chiapas province, and the city is trade center for the indigenous people, living in the nearby villages. In Chamula we met the maya-catholicism with th special maya rituals, a fantastic experience.

End of the tour included Uxmal in Yucatán, a well-preserved ancient Mayan city, considered just as impressive as Chichén Itzá, but with less visiting turists.

Have a look at my pictures from Puebla, Oaxaca, San Cristóbal, Mitla & Uxmal.
